Peperino Marble Grey

peperino marble grey

Grey Peperino marble is a stone of volcanic origin particularly widespread in the provinces of Viterbo and Rome. Grey Peperino marble, or Piperino, owes its name to the Latin term “piper” which means pepper: this is because its surface is rich in black particles of biotite that recall, in fact, peppercorns.
Grey Peperino marble was formed through a cementation process of materials originating from the ancient Cimino volcano together with other particles of various kinds as well as minerals, plant and animal residues. All this mix of elements has consolidated over the centuries making grey Peperino marble an extremely durable material, resistant to atmospheric agents while remaining perfectly workable.

The color of grey Peperino marble includes different shades of gray. Its gray background is then dotted with black points and lighter or darker spots due to fossil remains. Overall, the chromatic appearance of grey Peperino marble is homogeneous and free from other types of veins or cloudings.
Known since the Paleolithic, grey Peperino marble was a material widely used by the Etruscans and Romans. Nowadays, due to its strength and durability qualities, grey Peperino marble is used for both indoor and outdoor environments, especially for the creation of floors, stairs, skirting boards, thresholds, sinks and kitchen tops.
