First of all, a clarification: African black marble is improperly called “marble” since it is actually a granite. As we know, granite is a natural stone in some respects very similar to marble but, from a geological point of view, it is not calcium carbonate but a volcanic rock formed by slowly cooled molten magma.
African black marble is therefore a very elegant granite from South Africa and, in particular, from the North West province, an area of large and wonderful natural parks where impalas often graze: hence the second name of this natural stone, or black Impala marble.
Therefore, as previously mentioned, African black marble is a granite belonging to the gabbro family. The characteristic black color of this granite is determined by the presence of minerals such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, magnetite and the like. The distribution of all these elements is rather regular: for this reason, the color and structure of African black marble generally have a uniform and regular appearance. Like all granites, African black marble is strong and durable and generally has excellent technical characteristics such as resistance to compression, bending and abrasion.
There are many possible finishes for African black marble. For granite, the glossy finish tends to be appreciated, but in recent decades the matte finish is also increasingly used. In addition, the flaming of African black marble is also interesting in order to make this material non-slip and safe outdoors in humid environments.
The black color of the African black marble makes it easy to combine with different contexts. One of the solutions preferred by stone industry experts is undoubtedly the creation of African black marble floors in luxury villas or in high-level showrooms where prestige and sumptuousness is to be expressed. Since the surface of African black marble guarantees an excellent level of hygiene and cleanliness, it is easy to see this material used also for the creation of kitchen countertops with a strong visual impact. Finally, another environment in which African black marble is used most is the bathroom. In addition to the coatings, African black marble is wonderful for the production of the bathroom sink or even for the shower tray, again for the above reason: a high degree of hygiene and a sense of order and cleanliness.
